Happiness & Profits

I always have been fascinated about different company cultures and how they affect issues ranging from employee relations to corporate profits. I particularly am intrigued by how all our relationships -- work, with family and friends -- are critical to success. The discussion of company culture at Zappos, the online footwear and clothing retailer, in an article I recently read entitled Culture Shock resonated with me. It got me thinking about how much impact we actually have on the people and projects in our lives.
The article stated that at Zappos the company believed having a “good time” is an essential part of the bottom line. “If you get the culture right, most of the other stuff – like great customer service, or building a long-term brand or passionate employees and customers – will naturally happen on their own” Zappos CEO, Tony Heish, was quoted. Mr. Heish explains that at Zappos employees are treated like family, and when people are comfortable being themselves, the culture allows creativity to shine and great ideas come out.
This philosophy continues to be the cornerstone of Zappos success. Amazon’s purchase of Zappos in 2009 for $1.3 billion dollars is evidence that this philosophy really does benefit both employee relations and the bottom line.
Some of the other values mentioned in the article were: “Be adventurous, creative, open-minded,” and, my favorite, “Create fun and a little weirdness.” That’s exactly what we do here at Mind Machine; and we recommend our clients and readers to:
- Be mindful to strengthen the employee-corporate bond. It is the bond from which employee happiness will spring and, profits will follow;
- Promote a happy team, they will be your best brand champions;
- Facilitate a healthy work and life integration; and
- Recognize that loyalty, motivation, dedication and creativity all increase when employers nurture strong employee team relationships.
Finally, in all relationships that you choose to engage in on your life’s journey, try and be conscious that your attitude and what you bring to the table are critical, not only to your success, but to the success of those around you.
Think about it….
